Neighborhood History
The Exceptional History of Our Space
From our name to our historically inspired design, The Mason Apartments is rooted in Chicago history.
The neighborhood we call home, Fulton Market, is a part of Chicago's very foundation. It helped shape the city's industrial identity as a hub for meatpacking and wholesale produce in its early days, and today those historic brick warehouses stand alongside modern developments, creating a unique blend of heritage and innovation. This vibrant district is now a top destination for dining, tech, and culture, including Michelin star restaurants, Google headquarters, and renowned galleries.
1800s
Fulton Market began as a produce market along Randolph Street, where farmers and merchants converged to feed a growing city. It quickly grew into a powerhouse of the meatpacking industry, leveraging Chicago’s railroads and proximity to the Midwest’s grazing lands.
Early to Mid 1900s
The area saw huge changes in the 1900s, from brick and heavy timber warehouses rising to accommodate more and more need, to the invention of refrigerated trucking, dissolving the need for centralized food distribution centers like Fulton Market.
Late 1900s to 2010s
New life was breathed into the district as artists and galleries reclaimed the empty spaces, followed by restaurants, small businesses, and eventually tech giants like Google.

How The Mason Apartments Fit In
The Mason rises in Fulton Market as a modern tribute to the craftsmen who shaped this neighborhood’s soul. Its design draws inspiration from the brick masons and industrial builders of the 19th century, blending classic warehouse architecture with contemporary elegance. Exposed concrete ceilings, brick accents, and loft-inspired interiors echo the rugged character of the old meatpacking district, while sleek finishes and curated amenities speak to today’s lifestyle. Every detail—from the textured masonry to the rooftop lounge overlooking Chicago’s skyline—honors Fulton Market’s legacy of strength, artistry, and reinvention. Just as the neighborhood evolved from bustling markets to a hub of creativity and commerce, The Mason embodies that same spirit: rooted in history, yet boldly forward-looking.
